Explore the Swamp Fox Murals Trail
An area rich with history, Clarendon County invites you to explore the Swamp Fox Murals Trail and take a step back into the heart of the American Revolution.
In the early 2000s, a group of historians took on the initiative to highlight the deep rooted Revolutionary History in Clarendon County. Eying a truly interactive and visible mark, the Swamp Fox Murals Trail was born, and the first mural was unveiled in 2001. "Swamp Fox at Ox Swamp," located on the side of the City of Manning Fire Department, was the start of what would become over thirty different panels and historic markers across Clarendon County.
As noted by the name, the murals and markers largely follow the action of the legendary General Francis Marion and his fight for independence from British forces. General Marion was a smart and resourceful leader and what he and his militia of farmers turned soldiers lacked in traditional combat knowledge and firepower they made up for in knowledge of the land and perseverance. Each mural tells a story and provides visitors with the opportunity to catch a glimpse of life during the American Revolution.
